Das “Crossrail-Projekt”, wie die Verbindung quer durch London bisher genannt wurde, wird eine Regionalexpress-Linie zwischen Shenfield und Abbey Wood im Osten und Reading und Heathrow im Westen. 40 Bahnhöfe und zwei 21 Kilometer lange Tunnel werden entlang der 180 Kilometer langen Strecke entstehen. Die “Elizabeth Line” soll in fünf Phasen bis Dezember 2019 in Betrieb gehen – die erste Teilstrecke von Liverpool Street bis Shenfield im Mai 2017 – und Heathrow mit Paddington, dem West End, City und Canary Wharf später. Die Kosten des Projekts werden auf 14,8 Milliarden Pfund (etwa 18,9 Milliarden Euro) geschätzt.

Die Queen war 1969 die erste Monarchin, die mit einer Londoner U-Bahn fuhr. Damals eröffnete sie die “Victoria Line”.
